Prime Minister Manmohan Singh New Delhi, India Dear Prime Minister, I am writing to suggest that the first and chief aim of Indian foreign ministry should be to protect and defend rights of Indians around the world. Fair, respectful and dignified treatment of Indians in all countries and territories of the world should determine the respect and power of India that is so often claimed by Indian government. Indian passport requests and requires, I quote " in the name of the President of the Republic of India all those whom it may concern to allow the bearer to pass freely without let or hindrance, and to afford him or her, every assistance and protection of which he or she may stand in need." In reality Indians are not allowed to pass freely to any country in the world. Indian passport holders face many hindrances starting with harassment at many consulates and embassies within India who deny visas arbitrarily and incidents of racial profiling, inhumane and mal-treatment of Indians at border posts too numerous and common. Indian foreign ministry should concern itself with these issues when and wherever they take place. The chief responsibility of Indian government and its foreign ministry should be to ensure that no such incidents occur or go unchallenged. India must put in place a policy of reciprocity on issuance of visas with all countries and take up every incident of racial profiling, inhumane and maltreatment of Indians with the concerned nation. I request that you instruct your foreign ministry to start a cell where complaints can be lodged electronically and easily, through email, mobile phones or web sites by Indian nationals when they face maltreatment anywhere in the world as they often have no one to turn to when victimized. Each of these complaints should be made public and attended to expeditiously. I hope you will take this constitutional duty towards citizens of the republic most seriously and ensure that no citizen of Indian Republic faces racist or inhumane treatment at the hands of a foreign government. Respectfully, |
